As a doctor, I'm pretty nit-picky about medical dramas. ER and CSI drive me crazy with their inaccuracies. Scrubs is the only show I've ever seen that really gets everything right--not just the technical details, but the half-hysterical chaos of being thrust into a hospital and told, "Okay, school's over, this patient's life is in your hands." It's a sitcom, but it's got a lot more to offer than humor.

I first saw this movie when I was too young to get half the jokes, and I have to say, it has stood up well to the passage of time. The humor is unsophisticated, to put it kindly, but I still laugh myself stupid at "What's the matter, Col. Sandurrz... chicken?" and "It's MegaMaid! She's gone from suck to blow!" will NEVER not be funny.

The movie's funny in its own right, funnier as a parody, and still one of the best bad judgement calls my mom ever made.

Clumsy and awkward in parts, it's still an achingly sad story about irrational fear and intolerance. Besides which, Vincent Price! It's a fairy tale for modern times, much more in keeping with the brothers Grimm than Disney's chipper tales.

Attempts to speak to the way we treat the mentally ill today, and it doesn't do a great job, but it's not horrible (better than Garden State). Quinn does a good job portraying the frustration and guilty that come with living with someone who's mentally ill, wanting to do what's best for them but resenting having to make those decisions. It is telling that the movie, seen by most as the story of Joon's romance with Sam, is titled after her relationship with her brother. The end is a bit facile, but Depp is so charming throughout that by that point, you totally don't care.

This movie is intensely cheesy and I love it. Don't watch this movie expecting deep meaningful... meaning... or even a whole lot of plausibility. It's a fun little escape into the world of playing pretend--how very meta.

Being a big fan of the Gene Wilder take on this novel, I did not expect to like Tim Burton's vision. Wrong. I think it's much more true to the spirit of Dahl's book, and it is, in a word, delightful. Johnny Depp is creepy and brilliant, Freddy Highmore is adorable beyond telling, and the kids and their parents are absolutely hilarious. Every time I try to pick my favorite scene, I watch another five minutes and am reminded of some other brilliant moment. The side story with Christopher Lee is clumsy and adds nothing to the film, slows it down a bit, but it's pretty forgiveable just for the first view of Wonka's chocolate room, which is very Burton-meets-Seuss-meets-LSD.

A friend of mine got me this for Christmas, and I watched it 30 times that first month. Anything else I say must be heard with that in mind.

I think this movie, although immensely popular, is vastly underrated/underappreciated. There is a lot more going on here than the superficial "ooh, shiny"--although, come on, Johnny, Orlando, and Jack Dav playing pirates, there is a LOT of shiny. But the movie is subtly witty, snarky and sweet, and it puts several interesting twists on the tried-&-true story formulas Disney is so comfortable with.
